Savelugu police impound AK47 ammunition

The Savelugu police have intercepted 320 AK47 ammunition and two sets of empty magazines, which were concealed in a Kumasi-bound bus. 

The police also arrested one suspect, Yussif Salifu, in connection with the intercepted ammunition.

The Savelugu Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kwadjo Tawiah, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic

 

He said the incident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. last Sunday. 

According to him, a commercial bus from Bolgatanga, the Upper East regional capital which was heading towards Kumasi was stopped at the Savelugu police barrier and searched. 

Mr Tawiah said during the search, the police found the arms cache in a bag belonging to Salifu. 

He said Salifu was arrested and sent to the Northern Regional Police crime office in Tamale for further interrogation. 

Investigation

When contacted, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Ebenezer Tetteh, said the suspect was in police custody assisting with investigation.

He said in an earlier interrogation, Salifu claimed he bought the arms at Bawku in the Upper East Region and was transporting them to Kumasi to sell.

Court

The Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), John Anane, told the Daily Graphic that the suspect would soon be arraigned.

He said the police would investigate the case thoroughly to ensure that all those who had anything to do with it were brought to book.
