The activity of Honest Waste Services, a refuse collection company at Tabora Scorpion Down in Accra, is posing an environmental and health risks to residents in the community.

The residents complain of a stench emanating from the company’s vehicles, which has been a great source of worry to them for almost a decade.

The assemblymember for the Nii Okaiman West Electoral Area, Mr Samuel Adjei, said in 2010, the then municipal chief executive for the Ga South Municipality promised to do something about the situation following a letter he wrote to the municipal assembly, but nothing had come out of that pledge.

"In 2012 , I wrote another letter to the Health Director of the newly created Ga Central Municipal Assembly, who also promised to do something about the situation when he visited the area,” he said.

He said refuse that was collected on weekends was left overnight on the company’s refuse trucks before eventual disposal. He said in the rainy season, the situation worsened and residents had to hide in their rooms with their windows closed to save them from the stench and houseflies that invaded the homes.

He also said at the close of work each day, the company’s trucks blocked the streets, denying residents the right to enter or leave the area on their vehicles.

Pastor Edward Yaw Ankugah of the Tabora branch of the Victory Bible Church, said the unpleasant odour and multitude of houseflies from the trucks sometimes affected church activities.

When the Daily Graphic contacted the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga Central Municipality, Mr Aristo Aryee, over the matter, he said no such report had been brought to his notice but he would send health officers from the municipal assembly to assess the situation.

He added that if the matter was found to be true, an official letter would be written to the company to ask it to desist from polluting the environment.

He urged residents to not hesitate to contact the assembly to report any persons or institutions in the area who abused the environment.
