The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGAA) has officially broken ground for the construction of an eco-friendly Alumni Event Centre, envisioned as a hub for public events, corporate engagements, mentorship programmes, and a sustainable source of revenue for the Association.
The project, fully sponsored by distinguished alumnus and Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Mr Alex Apau Dadey, will be executed by Bafynn Construction and is expected to be completed within eight months.
Delivering remarks at the brief sod-cutting ceremony, Chairperson of the UG Alumni Association, Ms Doris Kisiwa Ansah, described the project as a milestone in deepening alumni engagement and creating a physical space that celebrates the heritage and pride of the University of Ghana community.
She expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Dadey for his generous sponsorship and unwavering support, describing his gesture as one that exemplifies “the true spirit of alumni commitment.”
Ms Ansah further expressed hope that the project would inspire other alumni to contribute to initiatives that promote growth and connection within the University.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, reaffirmed the University Management’s full support for the initiative.
He described the project as a valuable addition to the University’s infrastructure that will strengthen alumni relations and preserve institutional identity.
Prof. Awandare also encouraged other alumni to contribute towards similar legacy projects that advance the University’s mission of nurturing leaders for Ghana and the world.
In his address, Mr Alex Apau Dadey described his sponsorship of the project as “an act of gratitude, not charity,” noting that it would stand as “a lasting symbol of shared heritage, unity, and commitment to this great institution.”
Mr Dadey explained that the initiative reflects his long-standing connection with the University, which has educated his father, siblings, and several family members — making the institution an integral part of his family’s legacy.
The eco-friendly event centre will feature an adaptable stage, washroom and kitchen facilities, a photo space, a ceremonial entrance, and a central water fountain.
The ceremony concluded with a prayer of dedication led by Prof. Samuel Amponsah, a member of the University Chaplaincy Board, followed by the symbolic sod-cutting and planting of seedlings by key dignitaries, including Ms. Ansah, Dr. (Mrs.) Sylvia Awo Mansa Boye, Mr. Dadey, and Prof. Awandare.
