Volta Regional Minister demands action from ECG and GRIDCo over power challenges

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has urged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to provide immediate explanations and lasting solutions to the ongoing power supply issues and low voltage challenges affecting the region.

Speaking on Channel One's Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 18, Mr Gunu expressed concern over the erratic electricity supply, warning that it was severely impacting businesses and could hinder investment in the region if not urgently addressed.

“GRIDCo and ECG have a lot of responsibilities to explain to the good people of the region, because it is affecting businesses as I indicated earlier. And if we want investment to thrive in our region, we cannot do without power. So they owe us a lot of answers. And they need to come out and explain to us first and make sure they fix whatever challenges they have so that we can have a sustainable power supply in the region,” he stated.

The Minister assured residents that he remains committed to addressing the situation and will intensify engagements with the relevant agencies. He cited his prior intervention during the region's water crisis as proof of his dedication.

“I want to assure the people of the region that I will continue to put pressure on these institutions just as I did with Ghana Water Limited when we had the water crisis, and today the situation is better than it used to be. So I’ll ensure that the managers of our power system deliver quality service to us. And right after the Easter holidays I will go to them again, put pressure on them until they do what is right,” he added.

Communities in Ho and other parts of the Volta Region have endured persistent power cuts and unstable voltage for over a month, raising concerns from residents and business owners about the reliability of electricity supply in the area.
