Bye-laws are to be enforced — President
The enforcement of bye-laws of the various municipal, metropolitan and district assemblies (MMDAs) will be used as performance appraisal to renew the mandate of chief executives, President John Dramani Mahama has said.

He said bye-laws were to be enforced but not kept on the shelves, adding that MMDAS that failed to enforce bye-laws, especially those on sanitation, would not have their mandate renewed.
He said this in Tamale last Saturday when he joined members of the Northern Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to clean certain areas of the Tamale Metropolis as part of the National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise.
The President, who was on his way to Yendi to cut the sod for work to commence on the Eastern Corridor Road, made a brief stop to join in the cleanup exercise at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
He was accompanied by the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna.
Enforcement of sanitation bye-laws
President Mahama, in his brief remarks at the forecourt of the TTH, urged the various MMDAs to strictly enforce their bye-laws on sanitation to get the people to keep their surroundings clean and to reintroduce the sanitary inspection (Samasama) units to keep their areas clean.
He said the government placed much importance on sanitation, hence the institution of the monthly national cleanup exercise to inculcate in the citizenry the habit of keeping their surroundings clean.
He commended the Northern Regional Chapter of the GJA for seeing the need to partner other organisations to clean their environment, besides reporting on sanitation issues. He urged corporate organisations to support the NSD.

The Chairman of the Northern Regional Branch of the GJA, Mr Caesar Abagali, said the association decided to give full meaning to the NSD by undertaking the cleanup exercise at the health facility as part of its contribution towards keeping a clean environment.
A Director of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr Fiifi Amissah, said the support formed part of the NLA’s corporate social responsibility to ensure a clean environment.
