Chiefs, religious leaders must lead crusade against corruption

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr J. B. Danquah-Adu, has stated that because corruption had taken root in the traditional and religious set-ups, their leaders could not prevail on politicians to eschew the canker.

He indicated that such an unfortunate situation had made it possible for politicians to loot the national kitty at the expense of the ordinary citizens who continued to suffer economic hardships with no sign of it abating.

Mr Danquah-Adu made the remarks at this year’s Christmas and New Year convention of the Akyem Tafo District of the Church of Pentecost at Akyem Tafo last Sunday, during which he was honoured for spending approximately GH¢5,000 on the district chapel.

According to the Abuakwa North MP, it was the responsibility of the country’s traditional and religious leaders to lead a crusade on corruption, adding that their inability to do so had enabled politicians to be involved in the canker with impunity.

“Although our traditional and religious leaders used to be notable, selfless and upright men respected in society, it is unfortunate that corruption has now reared its ugly head in their undertakings and as such cannot keep a brake on corrupt politicians who are going all out to illicitly enrich themselves at the expense of the

down-trodden masses.

“It is, therefore, time for chiefs and religions leaders to lead in the crusade against corruption by prevailing on politicians to be upright in their undertakings for the benefit of all,” Mr Danquah-Adu stated.

He thanked the Church of Pentecost for honouring him, and promised he would continue to financially assist religious institutions since they nurtured good citizens for the development of society.

In a sermon based on the theme, “Unto us a Child is Born”, the host Clergyman, Pastor Bright Ashong, on behalf of the church, extolled the virtues of Mr Danquah-Adu, who, according to the pastor, catered for all irrespective of political and religious affiliations and asked all to emulate him.

On the political situation, Pastor Ashong was happy that Ghana was saved from violence associated with the election petition, which could have been a disaster.
