Ghanaians urged to sustain peace

The Ivorian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Bernard Ehui-Koutoua, has called on Ghanaians to guard against the peace that they are currently enjoying as the country gets ready to go to the polls this year.

He prayed that the upcoming election would further strengthen the peaceful environment needed for the country’s economic development.

The ambassador, who has concurrent accreditation to Togo and Benin, made the call when the Ivorian Embassy in Ghana celebrated the 56th independence of Cote d’Ivoire in Accra last Saturday.

Cote d'Ivoire celebrates its independence day on August 7 to mark its freedom from France in 1960.

He said after years of turmoil, Cote d’Ivoire was currently enjoying some peace as measures had been put in place to reconcile all people.

He said Ghana should not wish such a situation on itself and therefore, called on all people to unite and live peacefully before, during and after the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Appeal

He then made an appeal to all Ivorians living in Ghana and in the diaspora to return to their country to help in the rebuilding of Cote d’Ivoire.

He said Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire had an excellent and cordial relationship and expressed the hope that it would be sustained for future endeavours.

He proposed a toast for a continuos cordial relationship between the two countries.

Responding to the toast, a Minister of State at the Presidency, Mr Akwasi Oppong Fosu, in an address commended Cote d’ Ivoire for the numerous steps it had put in place after its 2015 presidential election to ensure that peace prevailed in that country.

He said Cote d’Ivoire had charted for itself a new path towards socio-economic development and further commended the resilience and will power exhibited by its nationals towards the success of the new agenda for the country.

He acknowledged the cordial relationship between the two countries, but said there was still some untapped potentials which could be exploited for the mutual benefit of the two countries and called for more collaboration.
