NPP Primary: How victorious Asenso-Boakye conceded on behalf of vanquished Okyem Aboagye

Deputy Chief of Staff, Francis Asenso-Boakye has officially been declared winner in the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary for the Bantama Constituency in Kumasi, by the Electoral Commission.

Winner in his third go at the constituency ticket, Asenso-Boakye polled 456 votes as against 122 by the incumbent Daniel Okyem Aboagye.

An elated Asenso-Boakye however, in a brief victory speech during which he thanked President Akufo-Addo, his family and all others who reposed confidence in him and helped him to the comfortable win, could not wait for the icing on the cake and announced that his opponent in the two horse race, Okyem Aboagye, had conceded.

Asenso-Boakye based his conclusion on his claim that he saw a missed call from the incumbent.

He told the media he had seen a missed call from Okyem Aboagye, and had tried in vain to raise him on the phone and proceeded to conclude that Okyem was calling ostensibly to concede defeat, for which Asenso-Boakye commended him for conceding.

First of all, I will like to thank the President, Nana Akufo-Addo for giving me the opportunity to serve in his administration and which has brought blessings to me, my family and Bantama constituency at large. Secondly I like to thank my family, my wife, my children, my extended family for the support they’ve given me throughout this torturous campaign process. I will like to thank the party, the constituency chairman, the constituency executives, the council of elders and patrons and all polling station executives for voting for me massively. This is a resounding victory for Asenso-Boakye.

I also want to make a special mention for former MP, honourable Kokofu for the support he has given me throughout this election, I really appreciate all, God bless you.

“When I was coming in here, I saw a call coming in from the Member of Parliament for Bantama and my contestant in this election, I couldn’t get him on phone but I suspect he was calling to not only to concede defeat, but also congratulate me. I also congratulate him for accepting the defeat and I want to assure him that, like I said in my previous statements, this is internal election and I bear no bad blood with anybody. Whatever energy, resources he has I urge him to come and support us so that we all move together for the bigger battle ahead of us in 2020…”
