President John Dramani Mahama has reminded civil servants to uphold the principle of political neutrality in the discharge of their duties.

He said by staying apolitical, civil servants would be better placed to offer efficient and dedicated services to the nation.

Speaking after swearing in the new Civil Service Council at the Flagstaff House yesterday, the President said professionalism must take centre stage in the delivery of services by civil servants.

The six-member council is headed by Mr L.B. Tusoe, a retired civil servant.

Other members are: Mrs Eugenia Adomako Gyasi, a retired civil servant; Mr A.D.P. Barnes, a retired Justice of the Superior Court; Nana Akwasi Agyekum Dwamena, the Head of the Civil Service; Mr Isaac Asiamah, a representative of the National Development Planning Commission, and Mr Isaac Bampoe Addo, a representative of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association.

Functions

The board is to ensure the implementation of the Civil Service Law 1993, which is to assist the government in the formulation and implementation of government policies for the development of the nation.

President Mahama said integrity played a key part in the effective running of the Civil Service and expressed the hope that the  board members would make it an important feature in their activities.

He acknowledged the challenges the Civil Service faced and said the government was working to address them.

President Mahama indicated that after addressing the disparities in salaries, it was incumbent on civil servants to work assiduously to improve productivity.

He also pointed out the need for the Civil Service to do away with bureaucracy, which was counterproductive and said the government was working to deepen the decentralisation policy.

President Mahama commended the council members and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver results.

Pledge

The chairman of the council, Mr Tusoe, pledged that the members would live up to expectation.
