Magical Dede powers Swans: From relegation zone

Swansea recorded their first ever league win over Everton as they hung on to record a 2-1 success in Francesco Guidolin's first game as manager, thanks to Andre Dede Ayew, who was instrumental in both goals by the Swans.

The visitors went in front through Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty after Tim Howard brought down Andre Ayew following John Stones' weak backpass.

Gareth Barry's deflected flick made it 1-1 just eight minutes later but Ayew restored the advantage with an effort which looped in over Howard off Stones.

Roger Federer

Federer cruises to Australian Open quarters

Roger Federer, the Swiss third seed, produced a masterclass to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals, easing past David Goffin in straight sets yesterday.

Federer barely broke sweat in his 6-2 6-1 6-4 dismantling of the talented Belgian, 15th seed on Rod Laver Arena.

The 17-time grand slam champion was in control throughout, only dropping serve once as he beat Goffin for the fourth time in as many meetings to earn a last-eight showdown with sixth seed Tomas Berdych.

It was a late start in Melbourne, with the marathon five-setter between Novak Djokovic and Gilles Simon earlier in the day forcing back the scheduled times on court.

Costa stuns Arsenal

Diego Costa once again proved to be Arsenal's undoing with the Chelsea man scoring the only goal as the reigning Barclays Premier League champions beat the 10-man Gunners yesterday.

Having tussled with Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny in September's reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge, Costa was again the villain of the piece from an Arsenal perspective as he proved the catalyst in Chelsea's 1-0 win - a result which leaves the Gunners in third behind both Leicester and Manchester City.

Arsenal magic to sink Chelsea?

Premier League leaders Arsenal will aim to maintain the top spot in the league as Arsene Wenger’s side welcome the reigning Champions Chelsea to the Emirates on Sunday.

The Emirates side look like real title contenders this season, having maintained their form throughout the period and ranking on top in terms of goal difference ahead of second placed Leicester City.

The travelling side, however, are a fading force who currently sit 13th in the league position, and their chance at Champions League next summer is almost out of hand.

A win against the London rivals Chelsea will see Arsenal bolster their credentials to keep hold of their position and become the league winners for the first time since 2004.

New Sports Minister comes too late — Pobee

A Kumasi-based sports administrator, Jonathan Abbey Pobee, has described the appointment of Nii Lante Vanderpuye as a shade too late for him to salvage the dwindling fortunes of sports in the country.

He said while the lesser sports, such as tennis, hockey, cricket, boxing, athletics and basketball, among others, were retrogressing at an alarming rate due to lack of government’s financial support, football at the senior level especially, was receiving all the needed attention and resources without providing the requisite silverware expected of it.

“The new sports minister has been a sportsman almost all his life but we cannot get the best out of him at this particular time. This is because his appointment has come at the wrong time.

“With his expertise and experience in sports over the years, as well as his revolutionary instincts, he should have been the first person to be appointed sports minister under the Mahama administration, so I wonder why the Preside
