Sports budget slashed four consecutive times

The Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority, Mr Saka Acquaye, has complained bitterly about government's continued slashing of budgetary allocation to sports in the country.

He said that the slashing of the budget for four consecutive times in the past three years was killing sports in the country.

'No need to cancel Euro 2016'

The Euro 2016 finals in France should not be cancelled in the wake of Friday's deadly attacks in Paris, says tournament organiser Jacques Lambert.

Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility after 129 people were killed and more than 350 wounded in the French capital.

Lambert, speaking on French radio station RTL, said: "Wondering whether Euro 2016 must be cancelled is playing the game of the terrorists.

Hockey: KNUST shock Seniors

The hockey team of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) delivered a shocking 2-1 win over defending Ashanti regional league champions, Seniors, as rivals Silver stretched their lead by three points after a win overt Royals.

KNUST are now tied with Seniors on seven points apiece in the second position after a rather shaky start to the season.

The acting president of the regional association, Kwabena Akyeampong, put Seniors in front in 30th minute but it was cancelled 19 minutes later by Alexander Frimpong, while Samuel Asare scored the match winner in the 53rd minute.

Togo has crashed out of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers for Africa, after losing to Uganda in their two-leg encounter on Sunday.

Ugand’s Cranes dominated the Hawks  at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, to record an emphatic 3-0 victory to advance 4-0 on aggregate having won the first leg 1-0 in Lome last Friday.

The Retired National Footballers Association of Ghana (RENFAG) has announced December 5 as the date for a football gala which will be used to celebrate the life of the late football icon, Nana Gyamfi Kumi aka C.K. Gyamfi

According to Alhaji Ibrahim Sunday, the chairman of the RENFAG, the 20-team gala scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium will afford Ghanaian fans the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the man "responsible for Ghana's football success" ahead of his burial on December 11..

"The retired players are organising the match and it will comprise 20 teams just to celebrate what he has done for us," Alhaji Sunday disclosed last Thursday when members of the RENFAG accompanied family members of the former Black Stars player to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

We’re poised for victory

Skipper Asamoah Gyan says the Black Stars have put last Friday's goalless drawn game against Comoros behind them and are poised for victory in the second-leg match at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi tomorrow.

Ebo Da-Costa has become the latest to etch his name on the growing list of winners of the MTN CEO Invitational golf tournament when he recorded a net of 70 with a handicap of five to win the competition last Saturday.

The 7th edition of the competition, which was played at the Celebrity golf course in Tema, witnessed a heavy attendance and the green course, coupled with the fine weather, provided little problems for Da-Costa who also won the longest drive in the men’s category.

The local league is likely to start next season without a sponsor following a decision by the headline sponsors, First Capital Plus Bank, to suspend its contract with the football governing body.

This was confirmed on Thursday by Mr Welbeck Abra-Appiah, the outgoing chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB), organisers of the domestic league.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports, the PLB boss said the news came as a surprise to him and wondered why the management of the bank waited till about a month to the start of the league to call for the suspension of the contract.

The 2015 National Goalball competition,  reserved for the visually impaired, came to a thrilling climax last Sunday at the Sekondi College in Takoradi with Volta Region emerging  the overall champions.

The three-day event, saw competitors from  all the 10 regions in Ghana competing for honours.

Volta Region that produced players who looked more composed and disciplined throughout the tournament emerged national champions` after finishing first and third in the male and female categories respectively.

Graphic to celebrate life of C.K. Gyamfi

Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has pledged to work closely with the family of the late football icon, Nana Gyamfi Kumi to ensure his life is well celebrated during his funeral next month.

The Managing Director of GCGL, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, gave the assurance when a high-powered delegation of traditional leaders and family members of the former Black Stars player and coach visited GCGL to formally inform the management about the funeral arrangements for the football legend, known in private life as Charles Kumi Gyamfi, who died two months ago at the age of 85.

The delegation was led by Osabarima Enyine Asiedu Akoo Ababio III, Benkumhene of the Akuapem Traditional Area and Lartehene, and included family members of the late coach. Other members of the delegation included Okyeame Ayesu Pentenprem, John Kumi, Kofi Asiedu and Francis Quartey-Gyamfi, a son of the late coach.

Fifa: Musa Bility rejected as presidential candidate

Liberia's Musa Bility has been ruled out as a candidate for the Fifa presidency following integrity checks.

Football's world governing body has approved five of the presidential candidates, with suspended Uefa boss Michel Platini also not included.

The Frenchman could be added should his ban end before February's election.
