Taekwondo chief wants more regional clubs

The President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Frederick Otoo, has charged regional executive members to manage and promote the sport in their respective regions.

That he said, was to ensure that taekwondo remained a national sport patronised across the country.

Inaugurating the Central Region Taekwondo Association in Cape Coast, Mr Otoo commended the executive memebers for setting up various taekwondo clubs in the region and urged them to support the national federation in its quest to register all taekwondo clubs and individual practitioners.

Comoros Island land Ghana in World Cup qualifiers

Comoros Island have been handed a difficult opponents — Ghana — for the second round of their 2018 World Cup qualifiers, after their dramatic qualification from the preliminary round.

Last Tuesday, the island-state of Comoros advanced on the away goal rule after a 1-1 draw away to Lesotho, having drawn goalless in the first leg at home.

This will be the first time Les Coelecantes' are going past the first round of the World Cup qualifiers and despite the fact that they have never won a World Cup qualifier, they get to advance, a feat which has been received with mixed feeling.

In many ways, this was probably the news that Cameroun's Issa Hayatou privately dreaded. Some 111 years on from its founding, FIFA is expected to be technically run by an African for the first time - news which should of course be welcomed on the continent.

Dogboe predicts early knockout against Krampah

 Ahead of a tough World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa featherweight title clash between James Town-based George Krampah and Isaac Dogboe, at the Aborigines Beach Resort in Keta on November 6, the trainer of Dogbe, Paul Dogboe, has assured boxing fans of overwhelming victory for his boxer.

The bout, dubbed the “Rumble at Hogbetsotso Festival”, would be a fierce contest since both boxers have started predicting early knockouts as the day for the bout draws near.

Over 150 swimmers to compete for honours in Kumasi

 Over 150 swimmers across the country will battle for medals and certificates in a day’s swimming championship being organised by the Ghana Swimming Federation (GSF) in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The championship, which will be held at the poolside of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on November 1, is not only designed to unearth talents across the country, but also to induce the youth to be interested in the sport.

Hundreds of people, mainly youth from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by the parliamentary aspirant for the Suame Constituency,  Francis Dodovi, stormed the principal streets of the Garden City, last week for a fitness walk to begin what is expected to be a bi-weekly exercise to make voters healthy and alive for the 2016 general elections.

Hearts to name new coach today?

 

Accra Hearts of Oak’s desperate search for a new coach appears to be narrowing down to two expatriates, Swede Tom Strand of Medeama and German Ernst Middendorp, who steered the technical affairs of the club during the 2004/2005 season.

At a meeting of a three-member committee comprising board member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, the club’s Managing Director Gerald Ankrah and Corporate Affairs Manager Joe Addo, the Medeama coach emerged as the favourite, according to a very reliable source.

Beleaguered General Manager of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Samuel Opoku Nti, has what could be his last chance to right the wrongs of the season as he has promised to lead the club to defeat Greece top club, Veria FC, on November 15 to lower the curtains on the club’s 80th nanniversary celebration.

Kotoko are desperate to win back the confidence of their followers by ending the anniversary on a victorious note, having surrendered the Premier League title, MTN/FA Cup and the annual Otumfuo Challenge Cup in a disappointing season in which they finished in sixth position on the league log.

Local Stars take on Ivorians

Konadu to lead local Stars in CHAN qualifier

Head coach of the local Black Stars, Maxwell Konadu, is expected back in Ghana today to put finishing touches to the team’s preparations for their upcoming 2016 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) final qualifying round first—leg tie against Cote d’Ivoire at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Konadu, who also doubles as the assistant coach of the Black Stars, is currently in Washington where he was on the bench with his boss Avram Grant for Ghana’s international friendly with Canada at the RFK Stadium last tuesday night but will take charge of the CHAN team when they play host to their Ivorian counterparts on Sunday.

Re-elected captain of the Accra Polo Club, Mr Kwakye Dopoah-Dei

Polo: Dopoah-Dei re-elected captain

The incumbent captain of the Accra Polo Club, Mr Kwakye Dopoah-Dei, has been re-elected for the 2015/2016 polo season at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on October 3.

The victory makes the president of the Ghana Real Estate Development Association (GREDA) an elected captain of the club for the fifth consecutive time.

Other members of the new executive committee are Wassem Helwani, Ricky Khubchandani, Justin Butah and George Agyemang.

The meeting discussed the development of polo and how to get the youth to take to the sport.

Members also deliberated on ways to reach out to corporate institutions for sponsorship of their programmes.

The new polo season took off last month with Ghana beating India to lift the Nkrumah-Nehru Cup at the Accra Polo Grounds.

Athletics academy opens at Lashibi

A former national athlete, Professor Charles Yendork, has instituted the first private athletics academy at Lashibi to train athletes for future national and international competitions.

He says he believes the new academy would help the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) to select the best Ghanaian athletes who have been denied the opportunity to showcase their talent.

Lutterodt dares GAA

The former Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) chairman, George Lutterodt, says in spite of the vitriolic attacks on his personality and the ugly noises from the GAA, he still stands by his criticism of the GAA leadership for failing to win gold in any major competition after six years at the helm of affairs.

According to him, the leadership of the GAA had not displayed the requisite qualities that can transform our athletes into winsome side in major tournaments since they took over.
