AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Black Stars in crucial duel against Angola

The Black Stars face a critical challenge in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as they prepare to meet Angola in Luanda tomorrow, November 15.

With their qualification hopes hanging by a thread, Coach Otto Addo's side must win this penultimate match to keep their AFCON dreams alive and hope Sudan lose all their matches.

At least a draw for Sudan who will be playing today, will finally seal any hope of the Black Stars and would make their game a mere academic exercise.

After failing to secure a victory in their last four qualifiers, Ghana is under intense pressure to secure maximum points against the Palancas Negras, with another must-win encounter against Niger awaiting them in Accra.

Challenges in camp

The Ghanaian squad faces an uphill battle, with eight invited players turning down the call-up, citing injuries and personal reasons.

This situation, combined with the recent captaincy change from Mohammed Kudus to Jordan Ayew, has reportedly caused some friction within the team.

Despite low morale and a faint hope from fans, Coach Addo remains confident, stating that it's still possible for the Black Stars to reach Morocco.

Ghana’s history against Angola include two wins, a loss and a draw. However, the Palancas Negras, already qualified for the tournament, are determined to give their home crowd something to celebrate.

Angola to honour fans 

Angola’s head coach, Pedro Goncalves, emphasised their intent to play courageously and honour their fans by aiming for victory against the Black Stars.

“We’re in a good moment. We go into games with the mindset to beat the opponent, honour our country, and enjoy the match,” he told Ghana Sports Page.

“This is our philosophy, and we will be brave on the pitch and try to beat one of Africa’s best on Friday”, the Angola coach said.

For this crucial match, Coach Addo will rely on key players like Kudus Mohammed, Jordan Ayew, Ernest Nuamah, Lawrence Ati Zigi and Alidu Seidu to pull off a victory. 

The Black Stars must channel the spirit of their 2010 AFCON quarter final win over Angola and look to replicate that success to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
