Cameroun crowned WAFCON champions at last

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun have beaten Malawi's Scorchers 3-0 to lift the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title for the first time.

Three first half goals from the Camerounians in the final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium were enough to finally win the coveted trophy after three failed attempts  in 2004, 2014 and 2016.

On  a night the Lionesses put up their best performance at this competition, they completely dominated play from start to end, leaving no room for error and capped the show  with goals from Ngah Manga (20th, 45th) and Naomi Eto (29th).

It was a dominate performance and every move was evident of their readiness to step into the role as queens having earlier taken care of the record title winners, Nigeria.

The tactics, approach and execution to nullify the potential threat from the Malawians worked well.

The Malawians had begun their WAFCON campaign with a fairytale run, beating tournament favourites Nigeria and Ghana in  their build up to the final.

With the Chawinga Sisters - Temwa and Tabitha  scoring eight of their 11 goals from the group stages through to the semi-finals, they were expected to lead their team to put up another show for the last time.

They did start on a high note, threatening a few times, but denied any joy by the heroic goalkeeper, Michaely Bihina.
By the 18th minute, the table had turned and the Lionesses took charge, keeping the sisters in check as well as having a go at the Malawi defence.

Not only was the Chawinga sisters' inability to score frustrating, their goalkeeper, Mercy Sikelo's errors on a night when she was expected to be at her best, let her side down.

Her mistakes and poor anticipation resulted in all three goals.

In the second half, Tewma and Tabitha tried to find other ways to get a goal past Bihina, but she remained resolute, proving why she was the best at the tournament.

Manga almost made it 4-0 and that would have made her joint topscorer on five goals, but her third goal was disallowed in the dying minutes of the game.

Though disappointed by that call, the Camerounians left no one in doubt that they had worked for this WAFCON glory.

When the final whistle, went, the joy and celebrations on the pitch and in the stands were understandable.

Their federation President, Samuel Eto'o Fils could not hide his joy, joining the team in the celebrations after the presentation.

The Lionesses' final performance was a perfect end to an impressive campaign of five wins and a draw in the six games played at the tournament, beating Mali (2-1), Ghana (1-0) and being held by Cabo Verde (1-1) at the group stages before winning against Nigeria (1-0) and 3-1 on penalties against Morocco in the quarter-finals and semis respectively.
