At least seven people have been killed in Russia following what officials described as one of Ukraine’s largest drone attacks of the year, with hundreds of drones reportedly targeting Moscow and other regions.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said 822 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across the country, while Moscow officials reported that about 600 drones targeted the capital region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the assault as one of the most massive drone attacks on the capital in recent memory.
The attack caused casualties and damage across several Russian regions. Five people were reported killed in the southern Rostov region, while a woman was killed in Belgorod after a civilian bus was struck. An 83-year-old man was also killed in the Moscow region, according to Governor Andrey Vorobyov.
A major fire also broke out at a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, in Koledino near Podolsk, south of Moscow. Three people were reportedly injured in the incident, while footage showed flames and a large plume of smoke rising from the facility.
Ukraine has previously targeted Wildberries logistics facilities, saying they are used to support Russian military logistics. Ukraine’s Defence Ministry said the latest strikes had disabled seven of the company’s 10 largest logistics centres.
The latest attack comes amid an intensification of long-range strikes by both sides. Ukraine has increasingly used drones to hit targets deep inside Russia, while Moscow has stepped up missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
Russian strikes kill civilians in Ukraine
Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukraine also left at least seven people dead and more than 39 injured, according to Ukrainian officials.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman were killed after a private home was hit by a guided aerial bomb.
Two people were also killed in Kryvyi Rih, while officials in Sumy, Donetsk and Kherson reported additional fatalities. In Sumy, a 51-year-old man was killed in a drone strike.
In Kyiv, air-raid sirens sounded four times overnight as the capital came under Russian attack. At least six people, including a child, were injured, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Russia said its strikes on Kyiv targeted a FirePoint facility producing components for Ukrainian Flamingo missiles and a factory manufacturing drone components.
Both Moscow and Kyiv accuse each other of deliberately or recklessly targeting civilian areas, while each side maintains that its strikes are aimed primarily at military or strategic infrastructure.
The latest wave of attacks underscores the continuing escalation of long-range drone warfare, with both countries increasingly striking targets far from the front lines.
