Parliament to launch second edition of Democracy Cup on Thursday

Parliament will tomorrow, Thursday, July 24, 2025, officially launch the second edition of the annual Democracy Cup at a ceremony to be held at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House at 3:00 p.m.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Parliamentary Service and signed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of the Media Relations Department. The event will be held under the auspices of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

According to the statement, the launch will unveil the two football teams selected to compete in this year’s Democracy Cup match and provide further details on the match format and accompanying activities.

“The second edition promises a lot of excitement and surprises, and therefore the general public and football fans are encouraged to support and participate in the upcoming game,” the release noted.

Initiated in 2024 by the Parliament of Ghana, the Democracy Cup is a sporting event aimed at promoting civic engagement and national unity through football. The maiden edition took place at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 17, 2024, where Kumasi Asante Kotoko beat Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 to lift the inaugural trophy.

The Democracy Cup forms part of Parliament’s wider strategy to connect with the citizenry through sports and shared national events. It symbolises Ghana’s democratic journey and the role of sports in fostering peace, cohesion, and patriotism.

Tomorrow’s launch is expected to draw Members of Parliament, football administrators, club supporters, and members of the public, as Parliament prepares to build on the success of last year’s event and entrench the tournament as a permanent fixture on the Ghanaian football calendar.
