Samuel Anim wins Cowbell Cycling League.

Samuel Anim last Saturday reaffirmed his status as the reigning Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Cyclist of the Year when he won the 2014 Cowbell Cycling League by cruising to first place in the final stage of the competition in Accra.

The 25-year-old bicycle mechanic saw-off the challenge of 68 cyclists to complete the gruelling 92.52-kilometre course in a time of 2:18.09; a six-minute winning margin over his closest competitor and teammate, Isaac Sackey, who crossed the finishing line in 2:24.00, with Clement Kusi placing third 49 seconds later.

As winner of the 18-lap course, Anim was presented with a cash prize of GH¢ 800, Cowbell products, as well as a gold trophy and medal, while second placed Sackey took home GH¢ 500, a silver medal and Cowbell products, with third placed Kusi bagging GH¢ 300, a bronze trophy and Cowbell products. 

Anim also dominated the individual awards in the overall classification of the three-stage Cowbell Cycling League, which saw cyclists complete courses in Tamale, Kumasi and Accra with all award winners riding home with Cowbell products.

The quick pedalling Anim retained the most coveted Yellow Jersey which came with a cash prize of GH¢ 2000, as well as a gold medal and trophy as the racer with the best time after winning both the Tamale and Accra stages and coming second last month in Kumasi.

He also won the Red Jersey as the most resilient racer and the Green Jersey as the cyclist with the highest points at the end of the competition, which saw him receive amounts of GH¢ 1,200 and GH¢ 1,500 respectively for his efforts.

Anim and his Quick Step Club teammates, which included the aforementioned Sackey, Ayittey Akoto, Amadu Moro and Newton Coffie, retained their Blue Jerseys as the best team by points which came with a GH¢ 1,500 cash prize.

The White Jersey as the best young rider was claimed by prodigious cycling talent, 19-year-old Anthony Boakye, who represents the River Park Sunyani Club, he received a sum of GH¢ 500.

The Cowbell Cycling League was preceded by a Bike Caravan which saw over 2,000 amateur cyclists throng the Accra Sports Stadium for a ride through the principal streets of Accra, with hundreds of participants winning Cowbell branded bicycles, helmets and products.
