Tennis star Ana Ivanovic confirms divorce from ex footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger citing ‘Irreconcilable differences’
Ana Ivanovic and former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger have gone their separate ways after nine years of marriage, with the tennis star's lawyer sharing a statement announcing the pair's divorce.
Ivanovic and Schweinsteiger were one of the sporting world's most recognisable couples due to their success in their respective fields, and married amid a flurry of press in Venice in 2019.
The couple first met in 2014, during the former German international's extended spell at Bayern Munich.
Schweinsteiger moved to Man United a year later in 2015, as Ivanovic was beginning wind down her glittering tennis career.
Their wedding took place in July 2016, with Ivanovic, who memorably won the French Open in 2008, then retiring from tennis in December 2016.
The former French Open champion and the World Cup winner share three sons, with their youngest born less than two years ago.
Their first two sons are named Luca and Leon, respectively, while the name of their third son has not been publicly confirmed.
After months of speculation over the status of their relationship, Ivanovic's representative Christian Schertz announced that the pair were separating due to 'irreconcilable differences'.
As per BILD, the lawyer then stressed that there would be no further statements from the couple, and asked for privacy for the couple and their children.
Mail Sport reported in April that the couple were in 'deep crisis' due to the strain being put on their marriage amid differing lifestyles.
With Schweinsteiger required to travel frequently for his varying punditry roles, Ivanovic is thought to have spent more time in her native Serbia, where she was supported in looking after her children by her family in Belgrade.
Schweinsteiger and Ivanovic's last public appearance came during the Laver Cup last September, with the tournament hosted in Berlin.
The pair then shared an Instagram post of themselves attending a Christmas market later that year, but updates on family life became scarce thereafter.
In June, reports in Germany shared that Schweinsteiger was seen kissing his alleged new girlfriend, who he is believed to know through their children attending the same school.
The woman - who was named in the German press only as 'Silva' - is Bulgarian, and had travelled with the 40-year-old to Mallorca after the couple are thought to have previously holidayed together in Morocco.
Most recently, Ivanovic has been in London for Wimbledon, the Grand Slam where the former world No 1 reached the semi-finals 18 years ago.
