Tribute concert in honour of Osibisa’s Teddy Osei in Kumasi tonight

A tribute concert in honour of legendary musician and founder of Osibisa band, Teddy Osei has been scheduled for tonight, April 4 at the SG Mall, Top High, Kumasi.

The free-admission show which is expected to start at 7:00pm is said to be a homecoming concert in celebration of Teddy Osei's remarkable contribution to global music and a tribute to his enduring legacy.

The concert follows an ongoing state burial at the forecourt of the State House today, April.

According to the organisers, patrons should expect an evening filled with the iconic sounds of Osibisa, blending African rhythms with rock and jazz influences, creating the unique "criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness."

The revered musician, saxophonist and founding member of the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa, sadly passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. (Read also: Teddy Osei takes final bow at 88, Burial mass of Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame to be held on April 5)

Born in Kumasi, Osei was introduced to musical instruments while still a child. He began to play the saxophone while attempting to create a band with his college friends in the coastal city of Sekondi. After graduating from college, he worked as a building inspector for a year before creating a band called "The Comets."

The Comets enjoyed brief popularity before Osei traveled to London in 1962. He received a grant from the Ghanaian government to study at a private music and drama school for three years, before being forced to leave by a regime change in Ghana.

In 1969, he founded Osibisa along with several other musicians. The band remained popular through the 1970s and is still celebrated for being a driving force in introducing African music to a global audience.

Osibisa's ground-breaking sound and energetic performances have earned him international acclaim and a dedicated following.

The tribute concert offers a rare opportunity for fans in his native Ashanti Region to witness performances by musicians in his honour as he is laid to rest on Saturday, April 5.
