• WAEC appeals for release of funds to facilitate WASSCE results

    The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appealed for the urgent payment of GH¢110.46 million to facilitate the smooth completion of post-examination processes towards the release of the 2024 WASSCE results. 

  • Asantehene to receive 28 more 19th-century looted gold ornaments from South Africa

    The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to receive 28 gold ornaments and regalia from South Africa, marking another restitution of Asante cultural heritage looted during the 19th century.  

    The artefacts include linguist staff, swords, palace security locks, rings, necklaces, and proverbial gold-weights depicting crocodiles and gold scandals. These items reflect the governance structures and chieftaincy traditions of the Asante Court.  

  • Pensioner in court for impersonating late brother to sell land

    A pensioner has been dragged to the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impersonating his late brother to sell a plot of land.

    According to police prosecutor, Chief Inspector Princess Tetteh Boafo, Roland Ababio allegedly posed as his deceased brother to facilitate the sale, with Kwame Gyane Ababio acting as an intermediary.

    Ababio, together with his alleged accomplice, Kwame, has been charged with conspiracy to defraud and defrauding by false pretence.

  • ECG customers unable to recharge NURI Meters amid emergency upgrade  

    Some customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) using NURI Prepayment Meters have been unable to recharge their meters for the past 48 hours, causing widespread frustration. 

    The issue is linked to an ongoing emergency upgrade of the NURI Prepayment Meter system, announced by ECG on November 18, 2024.

    When we assumed office in 2017, the education sector was burdened by a significant debt, outdated curriculum and inadequate infrastructure. Access to quality education, particularly at the secondary level, remained a challenge.

    Under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, with their Minister for Education from 2017 to the early part of 2021, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the government embarked on a paradigm-shifting journey to revitalise the sector.

  • Flowerpot flyover opens to traffic in Accra

    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday officially opened the newly constructed Flower Pot Interchange in Accra to traffic marking the completion of the infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic flow between key parts of Accra. 

    The Flower Pot Interchange, which began construction in 2017, is to enhance connectivity between the northern and southern areas of the Accra-Tema Motorway, greatly benefiting commuters in areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema.

The searing attack on a past president was no news. But criticism turned sour; and old age known as a blessing, got a new name, a curse!

    Desperate political rivals took the 88-year old to the cleaners, taunting him for the wheelchair to which he is now confined! In their words:

    ‘The heartless man who inflicted cruel policies as President deserves the wheelchair; it serves him right.’ Ouch!

  • GCNet loses GH¢4bn arbitration claim; Ghana awarded $2.2 million cost

    An international arbitration tribunal in London has ruled decisively in favor of the Government of Ghana in its legal dispute with Ghana Community Network Services Limited (GCNet).

    The tribunal rejected GCNet's claims and awarded Ghana $2,185,983.21 in legal costs, comprising $1,744,050.42 for legal representation and $441,932.79 for expert witness fees.

  • President Akufo-Addo inaugurates 200MW Bridge Power Station 

    President Nana Addo Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday commissioned a 200-megawatt Ghana Bridge Power Plant at Kpone, near Tema, in the Greater Accra Region.

     
    The project constitutes the first phase of a 515MW bridge power plant owned and developed by three parties: Endeavour Energy Limited, a leading US independent power development and generation company focused on West Africa; General Electric (GE) Vernova, a world leader in gas turbine technology, and a Ghanaian partner, Andaris Energy, an independent energy trading company, at an estimated $1.2 billion.

  • Centenary anniversary of the return of Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I from Seychelles launched in Kumasi

    The Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs has launched a a three day activity to celebrate the 100 years of the return of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I from exile in the Seychelles Island. 

    The three-day activity will begin on Friday, November 22, 2024 with a symposium.

  • Nigeria intercepts 50,000 tramadol pills smuggled from Ghana  

    Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 50,000 pills of Tramadol 225mg smuggled from Ghana into their country in a major anti-drug trafficking operation.

    The Daily Post reports that the pills were concealed in the body compartments of a Toyota Hummer bus allegedly belonging to GUO Transport Company. The vehicle, driven by a suspected trans-border trafficker, was intercepted last Saturday, November 16, at Ijanikin along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.  

  • Independent Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah withdraws and endorses NDC's Joana Gyan Cudjoe for Amenfi Central parliamentary election

    The incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Amenfi Central Constituency, Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, who was aggrieved and decided to contest the 2024 Parliamentary election as an independent candidate following his inability to secure the party's nod for another term in office has withdrawn from the race.

    He has subsequently thrown his support for Joana Gyan Cudjoe, who is contesting the 2024 Amenfi Central parliamentary election on the ticket of the NDC.

    The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has uncovered that some mattress manufacturers are using unauthorised materials, specifically polystyrene instead of polyurethane, to make their products. 

  • Anti gay bill suits: Supreme Court fixes Dec 18 for judgement

    The Supreme Court will on December 18 this year determine the two suits challenging the constitutionality of the Human and Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-gay bill. 

    A seven-member panel of the apex court which had Justice Avril Lovelace Johnson as President, on Tuesday fixed the date after granting leave to lawyers for plaintiff, Richard Sky, to amend their statement of case within two days.

  • NPP fabricating opinion polls to undermine credible projections - Mahama

    The presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deception, pointing to promises of giving each constituency $1million each year as something which has not been fulfilled.

    Addressing NDC supporters at a rally in Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Constituency in the Eastern region on Monday, Mr Mahama asked the gathering if the constituency had received its share of the promised $1 million. 

  • 6,200 Jobs created through SOCO project implementation

    About 6,200 jobs have been created through the successful implementation of the first phase of the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project in the six beneficiary regions.

    The jobs include 3,800 unskilled labour, 2,000 skilled labour and 426 community facilitator roles.

    The beneficiary regions are Upper West, Upper East, Northern, North-East, Savannah and Oti.

    The chiefs and people of the Nkonya Traditional Area in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region have made a passionate appeal to the government to revoke the curfew imposed on them and the Alavanyo Traditional Area over the years. 

    They made the appeal following the peace and tranquillity experienced in the two traditional areas in the past seven years.

  • Alumni protocol in our senior high schools: Time for rethink

    When I entered Form One at Opoku Ware School some 45 years ago last month, we were only 192 in my year group, with the school’s total population hovering just a little over 1,000 or so.

    Today, annual admission figures are around 1,300 for schools of the same size, with the school population around 4,000. 

    As the national population has increased over the years and with it the number of qualifying students seeking admission to our schools, along with the allure of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, demand has far outstripped supply at many of our senior high schools. 

  • Be moderate in critique of state institutions — Kufuor

    Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged Ghanaians to be moderate in criticising key state institutions.

    He said a cautious critique was crucial to maintaining the dignity of those democratic bodies such as the Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary.

    In an interaction with selected journalists last Sunday, the former President stressed the importance of showing respect for Ghana’s democratic institutions.

  • Ghanaians rank high among US visa overstayers  

    Ghana has emerged as one of the African countries with high visa overstay rates in the United States, according to the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Fiscal Year 2023 Entry/Exit Overstay Report. 

    Ghanaian travellers admitted for business or pleasure on B1/B2 visas recorded a 7.50 percent total overstay rate, with 1,910 total overstays out of 25,454 expected departures. Of these, 1,850 were in-country overstays, reflecting a 7.27 percent in-country overstay rate.

  • Otto Addo apologises to Ghanaians after Black Stars’ AFCON qualification failure  

    Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has issued a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians following the national team’s disastrous campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday sealed their fate, marking the first time in 20 years the Black Stars have failed to qualify for the tournament.  

  • Otto Addo points to "hatred" as Black Stars miss out on AFCON 2025  

    Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has suggested that external hostility toward him and the national team contributed to their dismal performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. 

    The Black Stars failed to qualify for the tournament following a 1-1 draw with Angola, which left them at the bottom of Group F. 

  • 7.2 million children targeted in second polio vaccination exercise  

    The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is expected to vaccinate 7.2 million children under five years in the second round of the National Polio Vaccination Campaign scheduled to start from November 21 to 24, 2024.

    Public health nurses would administer two doses of the oral polio vaccines (OPVs) to the children.
