Guan MP launches scholarship scheme

The new Member of Parliament (MP) for the Guan Constituency, Fred Kwasi Agbenyo, has said no child in the constituency will be left behind out of school due to poverty.

Scholarship scheme

He has, therefore, established a scholarship scheme with a personal contribution of GHc150,000, with support from some benevolent individuals to increase it to GH¢171,000.

Known as the Fred Agbenyo Academic Excellence Award and Scholarship Scheme, it would cover school fees, books, boarding and lodging for the students.

Mr Agbenyo announced this when he addressed a joint programme to launch the  scholarship scheme and the inauguration of the new Guan District Directorate of Education at Akpafu- Mempeasem.

He said the vision of the scheme was to advance education, knowledge and research in the fields of medicine, technology, science, among others, at different levels of education for the benefit of the people.

Additionally, he said poverty should not keep any child out of school and that they must have equal facilities to match up with their peers anywhere in the country.

He said education, the foundation of human resource development, was one of his top priorities.

Under the scheme, he explained that teachers would be well motivated, and parents would be supported in meeting their children’s needs, from basic through tertiary education.

The MP appealed to the citizens, both at home and abroad, churches, mosques, and benevolent organisations to join hands to make the scheme functional.

Mr Agbenyo expressed regret that, over the years, some teachers and students had to walk long distances to attend school, while parents, mostly farmers, toiled to support their children in school.

“All that will be a thing of the past, since under the scheme, dilapidated classroom blocks will be renovated and new ones constructed, while teachers’ accommodation and other facilities will be provided to promote a conducive atmosphere necessary for teaching and learning in schools,” he said.

He therefore urged the students to study diligently, prove themselves capable, and justify the recognition they had received in the area.

The District Director of Education for Guan, Sophia Mana Adigbli, expressed satisfaction that the scheme would elevate the quality of education in the area to match that of other regions in the country.
