The vehicles, which cost $3.36 million, are part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the health sector in the country.

Out of the 120 pickups, 76 were presented to health training institutions, including the Sunyani Nurses Training College, Tanosu Community Health Nurses Training  College, Keta Nurses Training College and the Kumasi Nurses and Midwifery Training College.

Forty-four of the vehicles were presented to various health delivery institutions, including the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Nurses and Midwives Council, Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Pharmacy Council.

CHPS

The Minister of Health, Mr Alexander Segbefia, who made the presentation, said the ministry was committed to ensuring the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) succeed and that was the reason why some of the pickups were presented to the institutions which were involved in the CHPS.

Mr Segbefia stated that the training of health workers was a priority to the ministry and it was, therefore, its responsibility to make training and learning effective.

He urged them to maintain and use the buses for their intended purposes.

“It is our responsibility to provide the necessary logistics to all health institutions to ensure that quality healthcare is provided and quality health personnel trained,” he said.

Mr Segbefia explained that some of the institutions had some vehicles they could use in the interim and, therefore, were not catered for in the allocation of the pickups.

Challenges

Receiving the vehicles on behalf of the institutions, the Head of Training Institutions of the MOH, Mr Christopher Beyere, stated that the inability of the institutions to acquire logistics to facilitate their work was one of the major challenges confronting them.

He, therefore, thanked the ministry for the provision of the pickups.
