Breast cancer fight demands collective action — Dr Wiafe-Addai

The Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love Hospitals and President of Breast Care international, Dr (Mrs) Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, has highlighted Ghana's success story in the fight against breast cancer, especially in the area of awareness creation, at the just ended World Health Association, (WHA) conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

She was a panellist of the Technical Briefing of the WHA, literally considered the parliament of the World Health Organisation.

She enumerated the gains her NGO had made over the years in educating the public, especially women, on the dangers associated with breast cancer and the need to report any detection early enough for treatment.

Challenges

Dr Wiafe-Addai said the success story  had not been without challenges as many still hid the condition for fear of stigmatisation and the widely held notion, especially in developing countries, that it was witchcraft-induced.

She appealed to the international community for increased assistance and collaboration to stem the incidence, pointing out that the deadly nature of the disease demanded collective action.

Dr Wiafe-Addai joined a panel of other talented global minds on cancer prevention and education at the technical briefing committee, providing some key messages to the attention of the delegates to increase their efforts in the fight against cancer.

Other panellists could not agree more, applauding her efforts in the midst of cultural and financial challenges.
