The incident, which occurred at dawn last Saturday, destroyed items worth millions of cedis. They included television sets and other electronic appliances.

It took firefighters several hours to bring the fire under control.

Officials of Melcom say they are yet to ascertain the cost of the damage.

Account of the fire

Some of the workers of Melcom who were on duty when the fire began told the Daily Graphic that they could not identify the cause of the fire.

According to them, the warehouse stored mostly the shop’s electrical gadgets.

Firefighters at the scene were cautious to get inside the warehouse to put out the fire because, according to them, there was a possibility that the building could cave in on them.

GNFS response

The Chief Fire Officer, Dr Albert Brown-Gaisie, expressed concern over the increasing spate of fire outbreaks.

He called on industries and institutions to install better fire response systems on their premises to minimise the extent of damage whenever there was a fire outbreak.

He appealed to industries to ensure that water was always available on their premises.

“Fire outbreaks in the country will significantly decrease if people improve their safety culture,” he said.

He advised Ghanaians to be careful when using inflammable devices in their homes, especially during this harmattan season.
