The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major fire that swept through the Fharkieh Plastic and Packaging Company Limited warehouse, located at Weija Junction, in the early hours of Saturday morning, November 22.
The fire call was received at 3:27 am, and firefighters from the Weija Fire Station arrived on scene at 3:40 am, just 13 minutes later. In all, eight fire tenders from Weija, Kasoa, Anyaa, Circle, Industrial Area, Headquarters, Dansoman, and Madina Fire Stations, supported by two water tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Weija Assembly, were deployed to combat the intense blaze.
When crews arrived, the fire was already well advanced and spreading toward nearby structures. Through a coordinated tactical firefighting strategy, the application of chemical foam compound, and prolonged cooling operations, firefighters managed to confine the fire by 9:00 am, preventing it from engulfing adjoining buildings.
The blaze was brought under control at 10:50 am and completely extinguished at 11:55 am. Although the factory’s machine section and warehouse, along with its raw materials, were totally destroyed, several other structures within the facility were saved. A nearby church and surrounding residential properties were also protected from damage.
One firefighter sustained minor burns to the right ear during the operation. He was treated at a hospital and later discharged. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
The GNFS expressed appreciation to all supporting agencies, including the AMA and the Weija Assembly for providing water tankers, and the Ghana Police Service for offering on-scene security. The Service also commended the professionalism and bravery of all firefighters whose swift and coordinated action prevented a full-scale disaster.
