King Teiko Tsuru II sprinkled the kpokpoi in the 21 houses that form the Ga stool amid drumming, dancing and firing of muskets.

As customs demand, the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, who is the Adobten (Head of military of the Ga State) began the activities with sprinkling of the Kpoikpoi from his palace through the principal streets of Ga Mashie to the Usher Fort.

It was a sea of red in James Town, Bukom and other traditional areas of Ga Mashie as indigenes of the area and their chiefs walked through the principal streets to commence the festival.

In attendance were tourists and people from the diaspora who are in town to partake in the festival.

Hooting at Hunger

Homowo which means “hooting at hunger” is celebrated by Gas to signify a time in history when they faced a great famine and ultimately came out of it.

A spokesperson for the Ga Mantse, Nii Kwardey Ntreh told the media that although Homowo is a time to rejoice and hoot at hunger, people were adorned in red attires to mourn their ancestors who died as a result of the hunger.

He explained that the festival was also a time for families to come together to settle any differences among them.
