Immaculate Wudzedeke - Dribbling challenges to attain greater heights
Wudzedeke is a spotlessly clean community in the Agotime-Ziope District of the Volta Region, with a resident population of 958. It is believed that 2,530 people from Wudzedeke live in other parts of the country and abroad.
The neighbourhood, community woodlot, and homes are so clean that they hold the first-time visitor to Wudzedeke in awe.
By its proximity to Ziope, Akatsi and Adaklu, the farming community with no market is strategically located to supply its abundant harvests of cassava and vegetables to ready markets in those areas.
Among the landmark features of the community are the Basic D.A. School and a CHPS Compound.
For decades, the problem the people of Wudzedeke faced was the lack of potable water.
The nearest river is about 13 kilometres away from the community and that was their source of water for domestic use.
Ten years ago, the river became polluted by invading cattle herds belonging to nomadic Fulanis.
Later, a dug out was constructed near the community; but the water from that source infected the people with water-borne and skin diseases, until a non-government organisation, Haven Hands and the Rescue Project, provided a borehole for Wudzedeke in 2021 at cost of US$ 33,500.
But the borehole could not stand the pressure from the community and broke down every now and then.
Finally, World Vision stepped in to transform the borehole into a solar-powered mechanised water facility at an additional cost of US$ 25,000, extending clean water to every household in Wudzedeke, and its sister communities.
It was, therefore, a day for great joy and jubilation when the facility was handed over to the community on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

This coincided with the sod-cutting for a US$ 1.7million library project for the community’s basic school, with funding from the Haven Hands and the Rescue Project, which had the Development Warrior King of Ziope, Amewodela Osagyefo Torgbui Kitikata I as chairman.

Now, with clean water, Wudzedeke is poised for even greater heights of sanitation and economic activities.
The Chief of Wudzedeke, Awadada Vizase Adzaho V, said the next plan is to provide every household in the community with decent toilets.
“Our soil is so loose that the ordinary pit latrines do not last for more than two months,” he said.
He appealed to governmental and non-governmental organisations for support to realise that dream.
Meanwhile, Torgbui Adzaho has called on the District Roads Implementation Programme (DRIP) to work on the feeder roads in the area to facilitate the marketing of farm produce from the community.
He said sometimes, huge harvests of farm produce were left on the farms to perish due to the bad roads in the area.
The District Chief Executive, Alfred Eklu Dikro, described the water facility as heartwarming, saying it would ease the burden on women and children who hitherto trekked long distances for water.
“It will also reduce the incidence of water-related diseases in the areas,” he added.
It is hoped Torgbui Adzaho’s appeal for better roads and household toilets would receive prompt responses from well-meaning and development-spirited groups and individuals to enable the community to grow from strength to strength and meet its development goals in the short or medium term.
