Govt expresses concern over slow pace of work : On Winneba water project

The government has expressed concern at the slow pace of work on the Winneba water supply rehabilitation and expansion project.

Work is said to be 65 per cent complete on the project that is expected to be handed over to the government next month (June).

The Winneba project forms part of a $165 million Akim Oda-Akwatia-Winneba water supply expansion and rehabilitation project. 

Work on both the Akim Oda and Akwatia projects are said to be 92 per cent complete.

Project

The entire project also involves the laying of a-242km distribution pipeline at Akim Oda, 143km pipeline at Akwatia and a 91-km pipeline at Winneba.

It is being financed by the Turkish Exim Bank with counterpart funding from the Government of Ghana.

Upon completion, the entire project is expected to produce 10.6 million gallons a day (MGD) with the Winneba treatment plant producing three million gallons daily.

The beneficiary communities include Akim Oda, Akim Manso, Attiankama Nkwanta, Aboabo, Batabi. Others are Akwatia, Bawdua, Topreman, Bamenase, GCD Camp, Asubone Camp No.4, Anweaso and Mmoframfadwen.

The project will also serve Winneba and surrounding communities such as Mpota, Gyahadze, Okyereko, Nsuekyir, Esubonpanyin and Pomadze. The rest are Ansaful, Bewadze, Gomoa Mampong, Mankoadze, Mprumem, Nkroful, Onyadze, Otsew, Simbrofo and Ankamu.

Expedite work

During an inspection tour of the facility last Wednesday, the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, who expressed the government’s concern, therefore, directed the contractors, ARDA GRUP, a Turkish company, to expedite work on the project to ensure its early completion.

Essakyir Water Supply Project

Dr Agyeman-Mensah also inspected ongoing works on the Essakyir Water Supply Project in the Ekumfi District as part of his tour.

The 3.2MGD-capacity project is designed to serve a population of about 163,000 upon completion.

He said the project was expected to improve the water supply situation at the district.
