Police pick up five more suspects over Asemkor chieftaincy murder

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested five more suspects in the killing of John Abban, brother of the chief of Butre and Asemkor, the police said on October 24, 2025.

The arrests took place between October 23 and October 24, 2025, in several locations across the Western Region. On October 23, officers arrested 50-year-old Kwabena Asirifi at a hideout in Ampataano near Asemkor.

The Regional Police Intelligence Directorate arrested three suspects in Abuesi on October 24: James Eshun, also known as Abeiku, 25; Joseph Aidoo, also known as Moree, 45; and Stephen Nyame, also known as Joe, 18.

The police said the five join others already in custody, bringing the total arrests to eight. Police records show Kwabena Musah, 55, was arrested on October 18 at Ahuntumano near Butre and appeared in court with fellow suspects.

Other persons named by the police include Kennedy Abor, also known as Abongo, 30; Kojo Attah Panyi, 20; Joseph Basses, 30; Abraham Cudjoe, also known as Yalle, 39; and Ekow Painstil, 45. Some of those arrests took place on October 15 and October 21, 2025.

All the suspects remain in police custody.

They are due to reappear in court on October 30, 2025.

The police said the investigation into the October 6, 2025, killing at Asemkor is ongoing, and officers are working to locate any remaining suspects.
