Turn attention to deterioration of structures — School authorities

The authorities of the Awiabo-Baseke D/C Junior High School (JHS) in the Ellembelle District in the Western Region have appealed to the government, past students and all other stakeholders to help stop the deterioration of the school structure, which poses a danger to the students and staff.

According to the school, no massive renovation works have been undertaken on the school block since its construction in 1964, resulting in the damage of doors and windows to the classrooms while the entire roofing leaks profusely when it rains.

The Headmaster of the school, which is in a predominantly farming and fishing community, Mr Acquah Bonyonwah, made the appeal when the Nzema Manle Rural Bank at Awiabo at a brief ceremony donated furniture valued at GH¢3,100.00 for use by the staff of the school.

Patch works

He pointed out that but for a recent emergency intervention by the district education directorate to carry out some patch works, the situation at the school, which had produced many scholars, would have got out of hand.

The donation was in response to a request for assistance made by the school authorities to the board of directors and management of the bank, who after a needs assessment decided to come to their aid.

Mr Bonyonwah stressed that the school had produced a number of students, some of whom were gainfully employed, so the current deteriorated state of the school structure should not have arisen.

Request

The Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Mr Thomas Quayson, explained that upon the receipt of the request, the board was quickly informed and, therefore, took an immediate decision to offer assistance, hence the donation of the furniture.

He indicated that as part of its corporate social responsibility, the bank had provided support for the communities in the areas of education and health.

Gratitude

The District Director of Education for Ellembelle, Mrs Elizabeth Akoako, on behalf of the school, expressed her profound gratitude and appreciation to the board, management and staff of the bank for their immense assistance towards effective teaching and learning in the area.

She observed that many people failed to recognise the role teachers play in providing quality education for the child, and said the teacher played parental, medical and other pivotal roles in order to bring children up to become productive citizens of the country.
