The MP also presented a cheque for GH¢50,000 to the Municipal Directorate of Education for the renovation of some basic and senior high schools in the area.

The books consisted of a 1,000 pieces of "The Cockcrow," a collection of short stories, drama and poems put together at the instance of the MP to inculcate the reading habit in the children.

To motivate the schoolchildren to read the book, a quiz will be held for pupils of the beneficiary schools on its contents and the successful participants and their teachers would be hosted at Aqua Safari, a holiday resort, for three days, as part of their prizes.

The teachers would also receive cash rewards and computers.

Presenting the items, Mr Quarshigah noted that because of poor academic performance in recent times, the Volta Region was no longer considered a destination for those seeking to advance their knowledge.

"In the last Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE), the Volta Region did not do well at all. We used to be the beacon of education in Ghana; unfortunately, that is not the case any longer," he said.

He said he had decided to invest in the education of children in the area "because if our children do not get the best in education, Ghana has no tomorrow."

The MP said he would focus on developing the reading and writing skills of the schoolchildren because reading was the fulcrum around which all academic work evolved.

According to him, he has initiated moves to procure more computers to be distributed to schools which have not yet benefitted.

He advised the schoolchildren to "take advantage" of the facilities provided and "work hard to get to the top."

"Fishing is no longer lucrative. The only thing we can cling on to in this area is education," he said.

Receiving the items, the Keta Municipal Director of Education, Mr Raphael Kwashie, said out of 182 districts which participated in the BECE last year, the Keta Municipality was ranked 111 in terms of performance.

In the Volta Region, he said the municipality's position was 13 out of 23.

He said the  rankings  were  a wake-up call to all citizens of the area to assist to reverse the trend.
