FIFA presidential election is beyond a joke

This travesty of a FIFA presidential election recalls the days of Comical Ali, the Iraqi information minister who declared impending victory over America while the rumble of American tanks shook the room in which he promised death to the invader.

All will be well when there is a new leader of Sepp Blatter’s failed state, next week’s poll suggests, even though major criminal investigations are in full flow. The English Football Association board met last week to decide which of the five candidates to endorse. Two are senior members of political regimes – Bahrain and Jordan – where democracy, transparency and accountability are not noticeably constitutional bedrocks.

‘Hearts will not fail’

After getting his Premier League campaign off on a winning note with a 1-0 home win over New Edubiase United last Sunday, Accra Hearts of Oak coach, Kenichi Yatsuhashi says his players’ confidence remain high and believes the Phobians will not fail their followers this season.

For the US-trained coach, last Sunday’s victory was a sign of good things to come, following their disappointing performance last season. But the test of the Japanese-American’s confidence will come on Sunday when he leads Hearts to face Medeama SC at Tarkwa in the top fixture of the second week.

He told the Graphic Sports on Tuesday that he was confident his players would carry their winning mentality into their next match against the FA Cup and Super Cup holders.

WAFA set eyes on Top 4

WAFA coach, John Killa, says his side’s home win over giants Kumasi Asante Kotoko last Saturday did not come by chance, but was part of the Sagakope-based club's grand plan to finish among the best this season.

"We have set a target of finishing among the top four this season. Last season, our focus was more geared towards staying in the elite competition, but this season, we want to achieve more and the first match is the start of that journey," Coach John Killa told the Graphic Sports.

The President of New Edubiase United, Abdul Salam Yakubu, has made a passionate call on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to bail out premier league clubs with seed money as the FA seeks sponsorship for the 2015/16 league season.

He fears most clubs are already financially distressed because of the delayed start of the league and could reach a point where they may be unable to continue, and even contemplate withdrawing from the competition.

The first round matches of the Douglas Djarbeng Top 8 Hitters Tournament came to an end yesterday at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club (ALTC) with  Benjamin Palm defeating Joshua Annan 7-5, 6-3.

The two players displayed many skills and entertained  tennis fans who trooped to the tennis court in their numbers, but it was Palm who showed much prominence by sending his opponent packing with two straight sets to book a place in the next stage of the competition.

Enterprising boxer, Isaac Dogboe, says he is ready for any challenge after pummelling  Michael Pappoe over 12 rounds in their WBO Africa and Interim WBA PAN African Featherweight championship at the Azumah Nelson sports Complex last Saturday.

Dogboe dominated from start to finish and met no resistance from a bewildered Pappoe.
