Clottey, Agbeko to fight in Accra April 29

Boxing history will be made on April 29 at the Accra Sports Stadium when two former world champions, Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko and Joshua "The Hitter" Clottey, mount the ring the same night to tangle with opponents from Brazil and Philippines respectively.

The bill, tagged "Legendary Night Boxing", is being promoted by Fresh King Entertainment (FKE) and Box Office Sports Promotions (BOSP), in partnership with Supersport and will see Agbeko, 36, taking on the 24-year-old Filipino brawler, Cris Alfante, over 10 rounds in a bantamweight contest, while Clottey, 38, engages 37-year-old Brazilian, Anderson Clayton, in a 10-round international middleweight bout.

The night will also see Emmanuel "Game Boy" Tagoe make a mandatory defence of his WBA international lightweight title against Mzonke Fane from South Africa, while world title prospect, George "Red Tiger" Ashie, fights Cid Ribeiro from Brazil.

Announcing the bouts at a press conference in Accra yesterday, Sitsofe Tsikor of FKE promised that fans who visit the Accra Sports Stadium on April 29 would witness a historic event as "two out of seven boxing world champions Ghana has produced will be mounting the same ring to fight opponents at the Accra Sports Stadium".

The headline acts of the bill — Agbeko and Clottey — who are in the twilight of their careers, insisted that although they were aging, they still had a lot of superb performances to give to boxing fans as they began their final charge for world titles on April 29.

Alfante was aged six years at the time his opponent, Agbeko, made his professional debut in 1998, leaving the experienced Ghanaian to predict that the fight would be a father and son affair.

"It is going to be a father and son game, although the sport is not all about age," Agbeko (30 wins, 5 losses, 0 draws) stated.

He continued, "Age matters a bit because you can't defeat nature. I am not as speedy and aggressive as I was 10 years ago but I am young in my mind, I work hard in the gym and I live a healthy lifestyle so I am very fit."

His counterpart, Clottey (39 wins, 5 losses, 0 draws) said he was contemplating retiring after the passing of his trainer but decided to soldier on for at least three more years in tribute to Godwin Nii Dzanie, alias Alloway.

The bouts will be broadcast live by SuperSport on DStv and GOtv networks to over 2.9 million viewers across the African continent.
