Golf: Short, others for Freedom Day Open

Former CHRAJ Commissioner Justice Emile Short and about 300 other golfers will contest honours in this year’s South Africa Freedom Day Open Golf Championship which tees-off on Saturday at the Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono.

The 18-hole tourney has four categories, including Men's Group A (Handicap 1-14), Men's Group B (Handicap 15 and above), Ladies Group A (Handicap 0-20) and Ladies Group B (Handicap 21-30), and will be used to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of South Africa’s Freedom Day.

The top five golfers in each category will be presented with trophies, including prizes for Nearest to the Pin and Longest Drive. 

Other notable golfers expected to participate in the competition include Kusi Boateng, Issa Adams, Catherine Boateng and Maureen Akuaku.

The Special Guest of Honour for the event is the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulama Xingwana, who will perform the ceremonial tee-off with the captain of the Celebrity Golf Course, Mr Akwasi Opoku.

The Freedom Day is an annual celebration of South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections in 1994 and this year's tournament is supported by South African Airways, South African Tourism (SAT), Old mutual, Multichoice, Cummins Ghana, Mobile Tout Terrain(M.T.T), Shoprite, Distell Company, Rose Glitz, Voltic, Trellidor, and First National Bank.
