UG Corporate Football League to crown champion on Friday after 20 weeks of action

After nearly five months of thrilling football, the University of Ghana Corporate Football League is set to climax with its grand finale tomorrow, Friday, July 25, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.

The final fixture marks the end of a 20-week tournament that has seen corporate institutions battle it out for supremacy on the pitch, blending fitness, camaraderie, and spirited competition.

At a press conference held today at the University’s Sports and Wellness Directorate Conference Room, key stakeholders gathered to provide details of the concluding matches. Speakers included Mr. Yaw Sakyi Afari, Head of RITE Sports Services; Dr. Austin W. Luguterah, Director of the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate; Mr. Yakub Alfa Suleiman, Director of Operations at Corporate Sports Ghana; along with sponsors, partners, and representatives of the four finalist teams.

Dr. Luguterah traced the league’s journey from its inaugural gala in November 2024 to its official kick-off on February 21, 2025. He commended the participating teams for their enthusiasm and thanked key sponsors including Glico General Insurance, Viggo Energy, Socaloca, and the Ghana Football Association for their continued support.

Mr. Yaw Sakyi announced that the final matches will begin at 5:00 PM, with each game consisting of two 30-minute halves and a 15-minute halftime break. Special guests expected at the event include the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo. CEOs of the competing institutions and sponsors will also be in attendance.

The third-place match will see Ghana Armed Forces Officers Sports Club square off against the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), while the title decider features Ghana Civil Aviation Authority against Union Ghana.

In pre-match remarks, representatives of the four teams shared their reflections. The NPA team noted, “We are grateful to God and the organizers for the opportunity. Even if the trophy doesn’t come home, the public knows we are a remarkable team. We invite Ghanaians to watch us in action.”

The Armed Forces Officers Sports Club, though disappointed not to be in the final, expressed optimism about securing third place. “We are prepared to beat NPA and finish strong,” they assured.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority appeared confident, citing recent victories. “We beat the unbeaten Ghana Armed Forces Officers Sports Club, the same team that defeated Union Ghana, so we believe we will prevail in the final.”

Union Ghana, winners of the opening gala and consistent performers throughout the league, also spoke with pride. “We’ve been solid from day one. We thank our coach and the organisers for a well-run competition,” they stated.

The UG Corporate Football League has provided a unique platform for workplace teams to engage in competitive sport while fostering wellness and inter-institutional collaboration. The final day promises an exciting end to a successful tournament that has drawn strong interest from both the corporate and sporting communities.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to be at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday evening to witness the crowning of a new champion and celebrate the spirit of corporate sportsmanship.
