Construction of fire hydrants in communities
It is the responsibility of the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Water Company to see to it that adequate fire hydrants are constructed in the country.
The two institutions must seriously discuss the importance of fire hydrants.
A fire hydrant is a valved outlet to a water supply system with one or more threaded outlets to supply fire service hose and tenders with water to fight or combat fire.
To a layman, a fire hydrant is a very essential tool used in fighting fires.
In other countries, parking vehicles near or blocking a hydrant is against the law.
As such, hydrants that are buried must be refurbished immediately, and buildings constructed on fire hydrants must be demolished without fear or favour.
This helps the Fire Service to fight fires successfully.
Currently, Ghana is an oil-producing country, and this poses a big challenge to the Fire Service in managing fires.
Therefore, measures must be put in place to avert calamity.
In my records, there are about a hundred fire hydrants in the city of Accra.
But the figure may be higher.
My appeal to the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Water Limited is that they should search for the rest of the hydrants.
This must be done all over the country.
A stitch in time saves nine.
