The Tema Motorway, particularly around the Manet Junction area, has long been one of the busiest transportation corridors in the Greater Accra Region.
Every day, thousands of commuters, students, traders, office workers and commercial drivers depend on this route to travel between communities such as Spintex, East Legon, Teshie, Nungua and Tema.
As part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and ease movement, the ongoing expansion of the motorway has been welcomed by many residents who see it as a major step toward development.
However, while the project promises long-term benefits, the current conditions along the route have created significant challenges for those who use it daily.
Poor drainage systems, severe traffic congestion and dusty roads have become major concerns, turning what should be a routine commute into a frustrating and exhausting experience.
One of the most pressing issues is the poor drainage around sections of the construction area.
During rainfall, water accumulates in large quantities because drains are either incomplete, blocked or unable to effectively channel water away from the roads.
This situation leaves deep, waterlogged sections that pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians.
Students are equally affected. School-going children and university students often struggle to find available public transportation due to the increased demand caused by traffic delays. Some students are forced to wake up much earlier than usual to ensure they arrive at school on time.
The uncertainty surrounding transportation has added unnecessary stress to their daily lives and, in some cases, affected their academic performance.
The challenges extend beyond commuters. Local businesses operating along the motorway corridor are also experiencing the effects of the construction.
Dust generated by ongoing road works settles on merchandise, reduces visibility and creates an uncomfortable environment for both traders and customers.
Some business owners report a decline in customer visits because many people prefer to avoid the area altogether.
Despite these difficulties, residents acknowledge the importance of the motorway expansion project.
Improved roads, better traffic flow and enhanced connectivity are expected to benefit the nation’s economy and improve transportation in the future. However, many believe that immediate measures are needed to reduce the burden currently placed on road users.
Residents and commuters are therefore calling on the relevant authorities to prioritize effective drainage systems, improve traffic management and ensure safer alternative routes during the construction period.
They argue that development should not come at the expense of public safety and daily convenience.Balancing infrastructure development with the immediate needs of citizens remains essential if the project is to truly serve the people it was designed to benefit.
