Abdul-Aziz Abdu-Rahaman has been elected as the Upper West Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He polled 173 votes to defeat Kantong Alaska, who obtained 86 votes.
The elections in the Upper West were initially disrupted by a protest over the eligibility of some delegates to vote.
The protesters, from the Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, alleged that some persons appointed to the constituency executive had been allowed to vote despite an earlier directive that they should not participate until a dispute over their eligibility was resolved.
They demanded the suspension of the election, arguing that allowing the disputed delegates to vote could undermine the credibility of the exercise.
Mr Edmund Bania Ayio, Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency Secretary and one of the protesters, said the constituency had petitioned the appropriate party authorities over the composition of its executive structure and the eligibility of some persons to vote.
He said the constituency had followed the procedures prescribed by the party’s constitution in making the appointments, but the constituency chairman subsequently submitted a different list to the regional leadership.
According to Mr Ayio, the matter had been referred to Dr Eric Ntori, a representative of the national leadership, for determination, but no decision had been communicated before the regional election.
He also alleged that the Acting National Chairman had directed that the disputed appointees should not be allowed to vote until the matter was resolved.
The protest temporarily disrupted proceedings, but voting eventually continued. The aggrieved members said they would pursue the matter through the appropriate party channels.
