Ghana ranks 38 in latest FIFA rankings

Ghana has moved up three places in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings released Thursday, to now perch at the 38th position. Previously Ghana logged in at the 41st position before recording a win and a draw against Mozambique in March.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, will join Joy FM presenter Kwame Sekyiama, better known as Lexis Bill, and hundreds of people from all walks of life on Saturday morning to undertake a rigorous exercise of climbing the Aburi mountain and back for the maiden ‘Walk with Lexis’ fitness campaign.

Togo have appointed Claude LeRoy as their new national team coach to replace Tom Saintfiet. Frenchman LeRoy, 68, has worked on the continent for almost 30 years and has coached at a record eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

GFA charges Hearts

The Ghana Football Association(GFA) has charged Accra Hearts of Oak on three counts for their violent  conduct in their 3-1 home defeat to Wa All Stars last Sunday.

 The Phobians were said to have breached Articles 58 and 59 of the GFA Disciplinary Code and Articles 35(1)(a), 35(3)(b), 35(4), 35(7)(a) and 35(7)(d) of the GFA General Regulations.

AWC qualifiers...Queens win in Tunisia

Ghana's senior female football team, the Black Queens, yesterday gained a 2-1 advantage over Tunisia in the first leg of their final round African Women's Championship (AWC) qualifiers.

It was a dramatic comeback for the Queens who had to fight from a goal down , and playing with 10 players, to win, courtesy goals in the second half from Samira Suleman and Princella Adubea.

James Oyedeji reported dead

Sports historian and administrator, James Oyedeji has been reported dead.

He died at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on Monday after a short illness.

Aboakyir Cup underway at Winneba

Winneba United last Sunday edged past Young Millionaires in a 8-7 penalty shoot-out to commence the maiden edition of the Aboakyir Cup at the Winneba United Park.

Both teams started brightly but none of them succeeded in breaking the opponent’s defence in full-time which resulted in a narrow penalty shoot-out win for the hosts, Winneba United to record their first three points.

With the competition being the first of its kind, the Aboakyir Cup, which is scheduled to reach a climax on May 8, is aimed to promote unity and peace, as well as creating excitement among the people of Efutu in the Central Region.

In Group A, Suncity FC from Accra will be competiting alongside Windy Professionals from Winneba, Spirrows FC from Awutu-Senya and Ahenfo FC from Apam.

Queens target Tunisia win today

African ladies take their turn on the action stage as they continue their quest for tickets to this year's African Women's Championship (AWC), their version of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

As happened in the men's event, the female teams engaged in the qualifiers will have double headers within one week, the first leg of the final round of qualifying matches to be played today across the continent, followed by the second legs next Tuesday.
