Ashgold crowned league champions

Accra Great Olympics yesterday bid another farewell to elite football despite coming from behind to beat Ashgold 2-1 at the Accra Sports stadium.

The result did not mean so much to Ashgold as they were already champions and were indeed, given a guard of honour by Olympics ahead of the kick-off.

Olympics supporters were seen wailing. They had only spent just a season in the Premier League but on the other side were Ashgold fans  dancing  as they celebrated their fourth league triumph after 19 years.

Ghana’s Black Loopers shock hosts, Congo Brazzaville

Congo Brazzaville, the third seeds whose players have spent one year preparing in China, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Ghana’s Male Team, the Black Loopers.

Derek Abrefa Ghana’s top seed started off well in the opening match of the contest by beating Suraju Saka, crowned African champion in 2008 in Kinshasa (11-7, 12-10, 4-11, 11-7) Emmanuel Commey in the vital concluding fifth match of the engagement also beat Suraju Saka (11-8, 11-6, 4-11, 11-6). However Hu Bin remained unbeaten for Congo Brazzaville, he accounted for Emmanuel Commey (11-4, 11-4, 11-6) and Derek Abrefa (11-7, 11-5, 11-7) but that was to be the sum total of success for the host nation outfit.

11th African Games: Host nation’s golden aspirations thwarted

Winner earlier in the year on the GAC Group 2015 ITTF World Tour in Lagos, Omar Assar proved the backbone of success for Egypt, the top seeds, as they booked their place in the final of the Men’s Team event at the 11th African Games in Congo Brazzaville on the evening of Saturday 12th September.

Impressively, the 24 year old remained unbeaten as the defending champions overcame the host nation’s third seeded combination of Hu Bin, Saheed Idowu and Wang Jianan by three matches to one.

The success came after the second seeded Nigerian trio of Seun Ajetunmobi, Quadri Aruna and Segun Toriola had recorded a three-nil win in opposition to Ghana’s sixth seeded combination of Derek Abrefa, Emmanuel Commey and Felix Lartey.

Kaijage admits AAG low to Falcons

Twiga Stars of Tanzania coach, Rogasian Kaijage has admitted that his team were inferior to Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the ongoing All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo.

The East Africans suffered a 0-3 loss to the reigning African champions in the group’s match day 2 clash at the Alphonse Massamba Debat Stadium in Brazzaville.

Ghana’s Akankolim knocks out Claude

Heavyweight boxer, David Bawah Akankolim, kept Ghana’s medal hopes at the All Africa Games alive when he knocked out Comeroun’s Kenfack Claude in the first round to win the 91kg contest last Wednesday.

He now awaits his opponent in the quarter finals after compatriots, Abdul Wahid Omar and Musa Rahman Lawson, disappointed in their respective fights to be booted out of the competition.

New format for BEIGE hockey

In a bid to produce thrilling hockey games, the Greater Accra Hockey Association (GAHA) has reviewed the format of its BEIGE Capital Knock-Out tournament which pushes off on Saturday at the Theodosia Okoh Stadium.

The new format announced last Wednesday in Accra will see the respective winners and runners-up of the men's, women's and youth categories of the just ended Greater Accra Hockey League season seeded in two groups of three teams in their various divisions.

Mutalib wins Accra Red Bull basketball

The last qualifier of the ongoing “Red Bull King of the Rock” ended last Wednesday at the Accra Polytechnic basketball courts with Abdul Mutalib beating off competition from Romeo Wilfred to emerge victorious.

With his feat, Mutalib will lead a four-member squad to represent Accra at the national finals which takes off later today at the Lebanon House in Accra.

Group Nduom pledges to partner SWAG

Meteors lose to Nigeria

Ghana’s Olympic side, the Black Meteors appeared to be heading home when they stumbled before their Nigerian counterparts who handed them a 2-0 defeat yesterday in their Group B encounter at the ongoing All Africa Games played at the Stade de Olympique de Unity Stadium in Kintele, Brazzaville.

A brilliant finish by striker Junior Ajayi Oluwafemi in the 54th minute and a late flick on by midfielder Kingsley Sokari in the 86th minute were all the Nigerians needed to progress to the semi-finals.

Inter-Bases Sports festival underway

This year’s Inter-Bases Sports competition is underway at the Air Force Base in Takoradi where participating teams (Bases) are competing in football, basketball, cross-country race, table tennis, badminton and tug of war.
The competition, which started last Monday and ends tomorrow, is being held under the auspices of Air Vice Marshal Samson-Oje, Chief of Air Staff.
