Although calm has returned to the troubled area following security re-enforcement by a combined team of police and military personnel, the town remains deserted, as most residents are said to have fled to neighbouring Togo for fear of reprisal attacks, while others remained indoors.

No arrest

So far, no arrest has been made. A swoop for weapons by the security on some houses in the area last Tuesday did not yield results.

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed on Bunkpurugu from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. is still in force.

The search in homes for arms was one of the recommendations made by the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), chaired by Alhaji Mohammed Muniru

Another recommendation made to forestall further disturbances was for the leaders of the two royal gates in the chieftaincy dispute, the Jamond and the Jafok, as well as the Chief of Bunkpurugu, Naba Abuba Bawa, to sign bonds to ensure peace.

The REGSEC further recommended that the chief of Bunkpurugu be made to step aside for a caretaker chief until judgement was given in the chieftaincy dispute.

Background

The killing of two men in the area last Friday sparked off violent clashes and exchanges between the two feuding families, the Jamond and the Jafok, who are engaged in a chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The renewed clashes also led to the killing of a 70-year-old man and injury of another person who is on admission at the Nalerigu Baptist Medical Centre.
