Opoku Nti — Drawing a lot of positives from the win over Hearts

Kotoko must now target league title

The General Manager of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Samuel Opoku Nti, has urged the players to draw inspiration from last Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Accra Hearts of Oak to re-energise themselves for an assault on the Premier League title.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports on telephone on Tuesday, Opoku Nti, aka Lord Zico, consigned the sweet victory to history but commended the players for their splendid performance which earned them the much-needed three points in front of a packed crowd at the Accra Stadium. For him, the sweet victory last Sunday was a significant feat which proved the team had the temperament to bounce back from their poor start to the season and fight for the ultimate trophy.

Kotoko were destined to win

Asante Kotoko winger, Eric Donkor, has described last Monday’s epic clash against arch rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, as a match Kotoko were destined to win.

This, he said, was because of the difficulties and obstacles they had to overcome to get the work done.

He said even in the face of all the machinations, heckling and intimidation by their opponents before the match at the Accra Stadium, he and his teammates did not give up but went ahead to win.

Record FA Cup champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, will make a tricky trip to Mpraeso to play minnows Storm Academy in an interesting MTN FA Cup Round of 16 fixture next week.

The Porcupine Warriors' northern zone clash with Division Two Storm Academy was the highlight of the Round of 16 draw held yesterday at the Alisa Hotel in Accra which kept all six Premier League clubs.

The nine-time winners will be hoping to take another step towards the MTN FA Cup title as they look to atone for last year's loss to Medeama SC in the final.

Abdoulaye Soulama — His howler last Monday handed Kotoko victory

Soulama: It’s my worst nightmare

Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Abdoulaye Soulama, has described his gaffe in last Monday’s league game against Kumasi Asante Kotoko as the worst nightmare in his career which he wished to quickly overcome.

In a rather sober and remorseful tone, the Burkinabe import said it was the saddest day of his life and that he could not sleep all night because he was haunted by the mistake as it kept revisiting him throughout the night.

“Right now I don’t have tears to cry; I couldn’t sleep last night because I kept thinking about it,” a disappointed Soulama said during an interview with Happy FM on Tuesday and hoped to bounce back strongly.

Spare Soulama of criticism — Nyaho

A board member of Accra Hearts of Oak, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has urged Phobian fans to desist from excessive criticism of goalkeeper Abdoulaye Soulama as he was already being haunted by the poor manner in which he conceded the goal against Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Stadium last Monday.

He maintained that any further criticism of the Burkinabe international would aggravate his already demoralised state, and rather appealed to Hearts fans not to unnecessarily put pressure on the club’s first choice goalkeeper.

A gift goal by goalkeeper Abdoulaye Soulama, which will remain one of the cheapest in the living memory of many followers of Accra Hearts of Oak, gave the Porcupine Warriors a rare 1-0 victory over their arch-rivals at the Accra Sports Stadium.

For Soulama and fans of Hearts, it was an afternoon they will quickly like to forget given the manner in which Kotoko earned the victory and bragging rights at the Accra Stadium, which witnessed one of the biggest crowds in recent years for the Premier League’s most anticipated fixture.
