UPAC B’ball: Takoradi Poly stun Marshalls

Takoradi Polytechnic on Tuesday recorded a stunning 59-57 win over highly rated Group B opponents, Marshalls University College, in the opening game of the Rexona Universities, Polytechnics and College (UPAC) Basketball Championship at the Accra Polytechnic basketball court.

The Takoradi Polytechnic basketball team led in all the first three quarters of the game (14-12, 25-24 and 42-36) but suffered a fright in the closing stages as Marshalls staged a late comeback.

Eight teams will begin their quest to be crowned the best tertiary institution basketball team in the country when the quarter-final stage of the Rexona Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges Basketball Championship tips-off today at the Accra Polytechnic basketball court.

The contest started last month with 28 tertiary institutions battling it out for a spot in the finals in the qualifiers held in seven zones across nine regions of the country.

Horse racing: Whitsun Race Meeting Saturday

The Accra Turf Club begins its Whitsun Race Meeting this Saturday, April 16 with four races open to horses in divisions 4C, 4A, 3B and novices to be run under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana.

The first race of the day, which begins at 1.30 pm, will feature five horses in Division 4C competing over a distance of six furlongs.

The horses are Let Them Say, owned by Mr Issaka Yartey, Rule of Law by Mr Philip Amuzu, Young Man also owned by Philip Amuzu, Korle Gonno Boy by Jara Stable and Omo Ni Ole by Nii Yemo Odoi.

Minister pledges support for weightlifting

The leadership of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), led by President Ben Nunoo Mensah, has called on the Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, to support his outfit's bid to unearth young talents in the sport.

Mr Nunoo Mensah paid a courtesy call on the minister last Monday to brief him on the upcoming National Weightlifting Youth Championship at the Accra Sports Stadium and also took the opportunity to invite him to the competition.
