Bombers bombed out of Rio Games

For the first time in two decades there will be no Ghanaian representative in boxing at the Rio Olympics in August, following the failure by Ghanaian boxers to qualify for the Games.

At the Olympic qualifiers in the Camerounian city of Yaounde, all eight boxers who made up the Black Bombers, including one female, failed to clinch qualification tickets for the summer Olympics.

Graphic Packaging (G-PAK), a subsidiary of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), last Saturday reclaimed the inter-departmental games trophy after winning nine events at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra. 

G-PAK, 2014 winners, lost the title to the Newspapers Department last year but put up a spirited performance to win back the title after winning the volleyball, 4X100 (women), ludo, musical chairs, tug of peace (women), sack race as well as the egg and spoon events for both men and women.

Kofi Nti Boakye lands deal in Nigeria

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko striker, Kofi Nti Boakye, has joined Nigerian top-flight side, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, on a short-term five-month deal.

The 28-year-old is attempting to revive his career after a shoulder injury sustained during a game against Al Ahly in the Egyptian League that kept him out of action for a year, thereby truncating his contract with Egyptian side, Misr El Makasa.

Ghana’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Medeama SC, last Sunday handed their Libyan counterparts, Al-Ittihad, a 2-0 defeat to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

Striker Abass Mohammed scored both goals to give the homesters a 2-1 aggregate for the qualification, having lost the first leg 0-1 in Tunis last week.

Graphic 2016 Interdepartment games: Who wins the cup?

Staff of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) gathered at the El Wak Stadium in Accra on Saturday to take part in their annual inter-departmental games.

The workers participated in a number of activities including, a health walk, tug- of- war, five-aside football, lime and spoon, volleyball, table tennis and sack race.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko recorded their first victory of the season after defeating Sekondi Hasaacas 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium yesterday to restore smiles on the faces of  their followers.

Kotoko laboured hard until Kwame Boateng scored in the 71st minute to hand the Porcupine Warriors a deserved win, having wasted many scoring chances in the first half against a difficult Hasaacas side.

Inter Allies, Hearts in crunch game

Tema-based Inter Allies are optimistic of victory against Accra Hearts of Oak in their Premier League week five clash at the Tema Stadium tomorrow.

Hearts currently lead the league log with 10 points and are undefeated after four matches, while Inter Allies have had a patchy run so far. Coach Herbert Addo’s team won 2-0 against  Aduana Stars, lost  1-2 to Liberty Professionals away, secured a 2-2 draw at home with Dreams FC and held New Edubiase United to a scoreless draw last Sunday.

  Now in 10th position, having scored five goals and conceded four, Inter-Allies will have to devise a way to get past a mean Hearts defence which has conceded just one goal in four games.

PFAG welfare fund launch Monday

The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) will on Monday launch a welfare fund designed to cater for professional footballers based in Ghana and abroad in the event of accidental death or critical illness.

According to a press release issued by the PFAG last Wednesday, the launch of the fund, christened  PFAG Insurance and Life After Football Fund,  will take place at 6.30p.m. on March 21 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Ghana banks hope on trio: For World Indoors medals

Ghana Athletics is banking its hope of winning medals at this weekend's World Indoor Championship on her trio, Flings Owusu-Agyapong (60m), Emmanuel Dasor (400m) and Sean Safo-Antwi (60m), earlier this month, successfully had a nationality switch from Britain.

The trio will be among the 500 athletes who have converged in Portland, Oregon, USA to compete for medals in track and field's first major event ahead of this year's Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) is convinced the performances of these three athletes so far in the indoor event, gives great hope for Ghana to get her name on the medals table.
