GFA President Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi

Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi’s questionable strategy

It’s a pity that Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi has joined the ranks  of public officials who don’t find it fit to apologise for their unguarded comments – even at the risk of tarnishing their reputation.

That Mr Nyantekyi has not been subjected to more censure and ridicule for his questionable “sexy ladies” strategy to boost attendance at football matches is probably due to the magnitude of the unfolding judiciary corruption drama in the country.

Clearly, the bombshell by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, reportedly backed by video evidence that some judges, magistrates and other judiciary staff are ‘on the take’, has eclipsed all other current public discussions.

Crentsil’s fate in a balance

The next few weeks ahead of the voting day for the upcoming Executive Committee elections look crucial for Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice president, Fred Crentsil, as he and the club on whose ticket he is contesting on, Techiman City FC, race against time to have their demotion overturned.

Last Friday, Crentsil and the other candidates were cleared by the election committee to contest in the elections, but his fate has been left hanging following the Ethics Committee 's ruling to demote his club for their complexity in a bribery scandal.

Techiman City together with Wa African United, were demoted by the Ethics Committee of the GFA, charged with conniving to fix a league match in the ongoing  DOL, but  the president of Techiman City, Charles Kwadwo Ntim, aka Micky Charles, told the Graphic Sports that Crentsil would not be affected and he remained eligible to contest.

Another wild goose chase?

Just as fighting corruption in Ghana is as fruitless as chasing after the wind, so seems the case when it comes to ridding Ghana Football of bribery and match-fixing. It is next to impossiblity!

That is why I treat any attempt by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to purge itself by way of finding scapegoats to deter others with a pinch of salt.

The latest controversy to hit Ghana Football in that regard is the outright demotion of two Division One League (DOL) clubs - Techiman City and Wa African United - for bribery and match-fixing. The GFA Ethics Committee found the two clubs guilty of conniving to influence the outcome of their 22nd week league match at Damongo.
