The ongoing National Women's League (NWL) seems to heading for a record-breaking goal scoring season as 76 goals have been recorded in just 24 matches at the end of Match Day 3 last weekend.

New stadium to host MTN FA Cup final

The newly-commissioned Cape Coast Stadium will host the final of this year's MTN FA Cup slated for August.

The decision, which was announced by the MTN FA Cup Committee Chairman, Kurt Okraku, at last Tuesday’s  Round of 16 draw at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, is a departure from the  practice where the venue for the final is usually announced after the two finalists have emerged.

According to Mr Okraku his outfit had already tabled a proposal to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) and the National Sports Authority (NSA) towards staging this year's final at the 15,000 capacity stadium.

Tuffour Frimpong apologises to Kotoko fans

Kumasi Asante Kotoko left back, Edwin Tuffuor Frimpong, has apologised to the entire Kotoko family for the red card he received during their crunch match against Accra Hearts of Oak at the Accra Stadium last Monday.

He said sheer determination to win the encounter might have led to his sending off.

“I was too determined and wanted to do anything to ensure we won the match. I also wanted to overshadow Isaac Mensah, who to me, was not a threat at all,” the young Kotoko defender told the Graphic Sports in an interview.

Tuffour Frimpong, son of former Kotoko and Black Stars international defender, Frimpong Manso, was playing for the first time against Hearts since joining the Porcupine Warriors this season but was sent off with about 10 minutes to end the first half, following a second yellow card for a foul on Hearts midfielder, Isaac Mensah.

Yeboah assures fans of comeback

Accra Hearts of Oak striker, Samuel Yeboah, claims his side did not deserve to lose their Premier League clash with rivals Kumasi Asante Kotoko but gave an assurance that the Phobians would bounce back strongly in subsequent games.

Hearts conceded the only goal of the game when their goalie Soulama Abdoulaye inadvertently directed a back pass into his own goal.

The General Manager of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Samuel Opoku Nti, has urged the players to draw inspiration from last Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Accra Hearts of Oak to re-energise themselves for an assault on the Premier League title.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports on telephone on Tuesday, Opoku Nti, aka Lord Zico, consigned the sweet victory to history but commended the players for their splendid performance which earned them the much-needed three points in front of a packed crowd at the Accra Stadium. For him, the sweet victory last Sunday was a significant feat which proved the team had the temperament to bounce back from their poor start to the season and fight for the ultimate trophy.

Asante Kotoko winger, Eric Donkor, has described last Monday’s epic clash against arch rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, as a match Kotoko were destined to win.

This, he said, was because of the difficulties and obstacles they had to overcome to get the work done.

He said even in the face of all the machinations, heckling and intimidation by their opponents before the match at the Accra Stadium, he and his teammates did not give up but went ahead to win.

The Porcupine Warriors' northern zone clash with Division Two Storm Academy was the highlight of the Round of 16 draw held yesterday at the Alisa Hotel in Accra which kept all six Premier League clubs.

Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Abdoulaye Soulama, has described his gaffe in last Monday’s league game against Kumasi Asante Kotoko as the worst nightmare in his career which he wished to quickly overcome.

In a rather sober and remorseful tone, the Burkinabe import said it was the saddest day of his life and that he could not sleep all night because he was haunted by the mistake as it kept revisiting him throughout the night.

“Right now I don’t have tears to cry; I couldn’t sleep last night because I kept thinking about it,” a disappointed Soulama said during an interview with Happy FM on Tuesday and hoped to bounce back strongly.
